![]() ![]() These days I don't do all my work on a single desktop computer, I want to be able to continue working on my MacBook when I'm not sat at my desk. One area that Parallels desktop has fallen behind other similar products is on the licensing front. I won't be upgrading to version 14 though. I've had problems over the years but on the whole it's been good enough and did what I needed, so a reasonably happy customer who then went off and deployed their Parallels Cloud Server software at my company on the basis of that. I've bought and used every release of Parallels since version 3 up to and including version 13. Parallels Desktop also now includes Touch Bar features on compatible MacBook Pros for OneNote, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Microsoft Visio, and other apps, while a Touch Bar wizard offers users the ability to customize Windows app shortcuts from Apple's OLED function strip. ![]() For example, Microsoft Ink is now available for editing Office documents, and stylus support has been added to CorelDRAW, Fresh Paint, PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. In addition, Parallels 14 introduces several Windows features for use in macOS. The company says virtual machines can also save as much as 20GB of additional disk space depending on how they're configured.Įlsewhere, the developers have optimized the compression of memory states saved with the Snapshots tool, which takes on average 15 percent less storage space, while a new disk space wizard provides users with suggestions on how to economize storage, with advice on managing multiple virtual machines and VM snapshots. This update puts a heavy focus on enhanced storage optimization, with Parallels Desktop being around 20-30 percent smaller than earlier releases. The sanctioned approach clears up licensing headaches, and Parallels Desktop 18 now lets you download and install Windows 11 with little effort.Parallels today announced version 14 of its desktop virtualization software for Mac, offering macOS Mojave support out of the box and significantly improved application launch speeds over the previous version. You needed to use an Insider preview of the OS at the time, though, and Microsoft said at the time that it didn't plan to support new Macs. ![]() It's been possible to run Windows 11 in Parallels on ARM Macs since 2021, and it even ran reasonably well. ![]() Don't expect to run some games, either, as anything that requires at least DirectX 12 or OpenGL 3.3 won't work. You can't use anything that depends on another layer of virtualization, such as Android apps, the Linux sybsystem and Windows Sandbox. Devices won't work unless they have Windows 11 ARM drivers. You can't run 32-bit ARM apps, in part because Microsoft is deprecating 32-bit software for all ARM Windows builds. If you need Windows for work, you can theoretically use the virtual machine without angering your IT manager.Īs you might guess, there are limitations. In a new support article, the company has "authorized" using Parallels Desktop 18 to run the ARM versions of Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise on M1- and M2-based Macs. Microsoft has formally approved a way to run Windows 11 on ARM-based Macs, if not in the way you might hope. ![]()
